The ancient city of Idyros is located within the borders of Kemer district of Antalya province. The city has not been mentioned much either in ancient sources or by contemporary authors. Therefore, the information available from the sources is limited. According to the information we can obtain from these limited sources, the city is thought to be a maritime city. Among the finds in the city are a mosaic church with a closed Greek cross plan dated to the 4th century AD, a necropolis area with amphora graves and a Roman bridge pillar. The amphora tombs in the necropolis area constitute a rare grave type all over the world.
Dating to the 7th-4th centuries BC, the similar ones in our country are located in Balıkesir and İzmir. The amphora tombs in the ancient city of Idyros are dated between the 1st and 3rd centuries AD, and similar tombs were found in Italy, Spain and North Africa. Other buildings used for social and commercial purposes are located around these structures. Excavations are ongoing to understand the functions of these buildings. The first archaeological studies in the city were carried out in 1976 - 1977 under the direction of Antalya Museum. These studies focused on the mosaic church and the excavations were mainly carried out in this area. The 2nd period excavations started in 2017.
These excavations were carried out under the leadership of Antalya Museum, under the scientific supervision of Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Hakan Öniz and Assist. Assoc. Prof. Dr. Murat Karademir and are actively continuing as of 2018. In 1976 - 1977, ceramic remains dating back to the 5th - 4th century BC were found during the excavations carried out by T. Özoral. Based on these finds, it is known that the history of the ancient city of Idyros dates back to the Hellenistic Period.
