Karain Cave is one of the largest natural caves in Turkey. Its height from the sea is 430-450 metres. It is located within the borders of Yağca village, 30 km northwest of Antalya, 5-6 km from the old Antalya-Burdur highway. The distance to Antalya is 27 km. Excavations have been carried out since 1946. From the excavations, it was concluded that the region was used as a settlement centre about 500.000 years ago. It is the largest cave in Turkey in which people have lived. Karain Cave is an important Palaeolithic centre in terms of Anatolian and Near East history. In addition, Karain, which plays an important role in revealing the ancient environment of the Western Mediterranean with its plant and animal remains, is proposed to the World Heritage List as a mixed site for its natural and cultural features together with other caves in its vicinity.
