Description

Laertes Ancient city; It was founded on the Taurus Mountains, on the southern slopes of Cebel-i Reis Mountain, which rises at the mouth of the Dim Valley, 850 meters above sea level. It is about 25 kilometers from Alanya. It is within the borders of the region known as Mountainous Cilicia in antiquity.

The important ruins of the city that have survived to the present day are the agora, exedra, baths, cisterns, theater, houses and temples of Emperor Claudius, Apollo and Zeus Megistos. The lack of remains from the Hellenistic period in the city is attributed to the fact that the region was in the hands of pirates during that period and therefore construction activities were not sufficiently carried out.

The stone inscription found in Laertes, which dates back to the 7th century B.C. and dates the history of the city earlier, with some local names on it, is exhibited in the Alanya Archaeological Museum. The inscription deals with the servant of the provincial governor and the problems in the concept of property. The necropolis of the city is in the south. In the necropolis area there are many fragments of ossuaries and the pedestals on which the ossuaries stood.
