Description

The ancient city of Lyrbe, a Pamphylian city, is located near the Bucakşeyhler quarter of Manavgat district. The city, which seems to be hidden among pine trees, is built on a hill that extends from the forest to the south; from here you can see a wonderful view of the Oymapınar Dam.

The real name of the city, which was introduced as Seleukeia in ancient publications, is probably Lyrbe. Founded in the Hellenistic period, Seleukeia was a port city and was probably located on the coast, west of Side. The oldest findings from Lyrbe belong to the classical period. The inscriptions in the Side language found in Lyrbe indicate that this settlement was inhabited by the same people as Side in ancient times.

The ruins that can be seen in the city today belong to the Hellenistic, Roman and Byzantine periods. They include the city walls, the best preserved agora of Pamphylia, baths, temples, cisterns, churches and tombs. The sculptures and mosaics found during the excavations carried out in Lyrbe between 1972 and 1979 by a team from Istanbul University under the direction of Prof. Dr. Jale Inan are now on display at the Antalya Archaeological Museum. Various artifacts found by chance in later years can be seen in the Side Archaeological Museum.
