Description

Onobara Ancient City is located in a region within the borders of Konyaaltı in Antalya. The ancient city, popularly known as Asarlık Hill and located in the Hisarcık region in the southwest region of Çakırlar neighbourhood, is on the ridge at the southeast end of Deveboynu Hill. Discovered in 1892 for the first time by Rudolf Heberdey and Ernst Kalinka, there is very little information about the ancient city.

The name of the city means "Anavvaura" meaning "Great Slope" in Luwi original. It has the feature of a fortress city connected to the nearby Trebenna Ancient City. It was built as a front outpost against the enemy attack that Trebenna would face. Onobara Ancient City was lower than Trebenna in terms of location and served as a front outpost. In other words, when the enemy attack could not be resisted, the soldiers were planned to retreat to the ancient city of Trebenna, which was the last defence centre in the position of an acropolis city, and was built with a strategic idea in terms of location. The 2.00-2.50 m. thick fortification walls visible at the western end of Deveboynu Hill were oriented towards the city centre, supported by two towers 50 m. apart in the eastern direction.

Almost all of the building materials of the ruins in the settlement centre belonging to the Roman and Byzantine periods belong to the Roman period, while the buildings are Byzantine in their final form. The three-room Byzantine structure built with spolia is remarkable. To the south of the Byzantine building, there are three other rooms orientated in the east-west direction. The most important Byzantine building is a well-preserved small church.
