Patara, which is a Special Environmental Protection Area, is 45 km. away from the district center on the Kas-Fethiye road. Patara is the widest and longest sandy beach in Turkey. Caretta caretta and Chelonia mydas, two of the 5 different species of sea turtles living in the Mediterranean, use 17 regions of the Antalya coast as spawning beaches.
Belek, Manavgat, Tekirova, Tekirova, Çıralı, Olympos, Adrasan, Kumluca and Kale beaches are also first degree sea turtle nesting sites. The sea turtle population starts from the east of the mouth of the Eşen Stream on Patara beach and continues eastward towards Gelemiş village until the mountainous part at the eastern end of the beach in front of the ancient city. This beach, which is about 7 km. long, contains very fine and clean sand.
