The Ancient Theatre of Side is located in the narrowing of the peninsula where the ancient city of Side is situated, and in the centre of the city. It has not yet been proven that the theatre is a pioneer building of the Hellenistic period. Although the plan of the building is in the Hellenistic tradition with a semicircular shape, the construction technique is in the Roman architectural tradition.
In the theatre, the part of the cavea (rows of seats) that goes up to the diazoma (central aisle) leans against a slope, while the upper part rests on a vaulted slab. The theatre is one of the unique examples in Anatolia with this feature.
The theatre has three floors. The Baroque characteristics of the Antonine period can be seen in its decorations. On the podium of the first floor is the Dionysian frieze. The frieze describes the life of Dionysus, god of wine and ruler of the theatre, chronologically from west to east, ending with Gigantomakhia at the eastern end. The façade of the stage building is richly decorated with architectural ornaments and sculptures.
