Syedra, whose settlement dates back to the 9th century B.C., is located approximately 20 kilometers southeast of Alanya, within the borders of the Seki district. Its location makes it one of the most strategic cities in the region. The "Upper City" part of Syedra, which has the characteristics of both a mountain city and a coastal city, was built at an altitude of 400 meters and on a slope; therefore, the buildings were placed gradually and the transitions between the different levels were provided by stairs. The "Lower City" is a port settlement that extends from the southwestern slopes to the coast. The inscriptions unearthed during the excavations in Syedra show that the city was a center where important competitions were organized and that it experienced its most glorious years between the 2nd and 4th centuries BC. It can be said that the traces of life in the city continued until the 13th century.
The mosaics and inscriptions found during the excavations in the port area of Syedra, called the Lower City, are exhibited in the Alanya Museum. The structures that reveal the urban area are in the Upper City. Here, the existing wooden walkway leads from the visitor's reception area to the 250 meter long colonnaded street. This was once the social center of the city and the place where people gathered most intensely. At the western end of the colonnade, at the point where you can climb the stairs and enjoy one of the most beautiful views of the Mediterranean, is a heroon/monumental tomb. Among the most magnificent buildings of the city are the Great Baths and the Gymnasium adjacent to the Baths, where athletes were trained and competitions were held.
The olive-processing workshops to the west of the city give an idea of what life was like in the city. The water from the "Cistern" (spring) cave, fed by a natural spring, is collected in very large cisterns. One of the most interesting places is the "Baptism Cave", carved into the rock and decorated with frescoes; it is understood that it had a religious function due to the pool inside. Syedra invites you to an unforgettable historical journey with its cultural treasures and natural beauties that vividly preserve the traces of life of past civilizations.
